Abstract : Aims: The purpose of the study was to to evaluate and compare two rotary systems (TF Adaptive and iRace) utilizing the micro-CT technology, the shaping characteristics of continuous rotation and adaptive kinematics in the preparation of root canal systems in an ex-vivo model and to investigate the micro-cleanness of different advance irrigation devices after preparation on accumulated hard tissue debris. Materials and methods: Twenty mesial roots of mandibular molars with a single and continuous isthmus connecting the mesiobuccal and mesiolingual canals (Vertucci’s Type I configuration) (n=40). Ten distal roots with independed canals (n=10) were selected and scanned at a resolution of 14 μm. Canals were divided equally into two groups and then enlarged sequentially using iRace and TF Adaptive system small according to manufacturer protocol. Then, 12 specimen’s teeth were randomly matched and distributed Into two subgroups according to advance irrigation protocol into XP-Endo (XP) finisher and EndoVac groups. The advance irrigation protocol was performed over 2 min using a total 5 ml of 5.25% NaOCl per canal. Three dimensional images were reconstructed. The parameters evaluated included canal surface area, volume, structure model index, thickness, straightening, uninstrumented surface area and the mean percentage reduction of accumulated hard-tissue debris after advance irrigation protocol. Results: Preparation significantly changed canal surface area, volume, structure model index and thickness. There were no significant differences between instrument types concerning these parameters and uninstrumented surface area (P > 0.05). TF adaptive was associated with less straightening 8% compared with 17% for the iRace in the mesial canal (independent-samples t test, P = .045). Reduction of accumulated hard-tissue debris was observed in all groups after the final irrigation protocol. Overall reduction of Endo Vac and XP 59% and 40% in mesials canals, 60% and 48% in distal canals, respectively. No significant differences were found when comparing the results of EndoVac and XPF groups (P > 0.05) Conclusions: Both of the instrumentation systems produced canal preparations with adequate geometry changes. iRace straighten the mesials canals more than the TF. The EndoVac and XP-endo Finisher instrument were associated with significantly lower levels of hard tissue debris compared with conventional irrigation technique alone.
