Abstract
:
Purpose One study reports that billions of dollars are spent annually in the United States on laboratory testing, and that one-third of these tests are considered unnecessary. In Saudi Arabia, there are no evidence-based studies regarding pre-transfusion tests and their cost. This study aimed to assess and enhance the efficiency of the transfusion services. The continuous evaluation of blood transfusion requests is a proper practice, which enhances the usage of blood stock and financial resources. Methodology The study was conducted in two phases. The first phase lasted for three months to review the indications for blood requesting. The second phase encompassed prospective procedures to sort the blood transfusion requests (BTR) according to the patients’ conditions starting on April 1st and lasting for nine months. The crossmatch/transfusion (C/T) ratio and a cost comparison were the evaluating factors. The data were analyzed using an Excel spreadsheet and SPSS statistical software. Results Retrospectively, only 5.4 percent out of 1429 blood units were transfused. The C/T ratio of Caesareans was 10 times the AABB recommended limit. 94 % of the blood units were damaged due to repeated booking. The corrective intervention enhanced the efficiency of transfusion service greatly, and 100% of the ordered blood units were used. The C/T ratio improved to the recommended limit. The number of destroyed units sharply decreased from 450 units to zero; therefore, 83 percent of the services costs were saved. Conclusion The policy enhances the efficient utilization of RBC stock and laboratory testing and saves on additional, unnecessary costs.
