Abstract
:
The research aimed to study the effectiveness of a math center based on the early learning standards in developing the number concepts for preschoolers in Makkah city. The researcher used the quasi-experimental method based on the two groups design; a controlled group and an experimental group. The sample consisted of (45) children. Three research tools were implemented; Test of Early Mathematic Ability-2 (TEMA-2) as a pre- and post-test for the sample, an open observation card to note the level of interaction with materials in the math center, and the weekly follow-up card to record the number of times the children used to enter the math center and how many minutes do they stay there. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney Test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Spearman's rho, and Cohen's d. The findings are: there are significant differences among the average marks of the experimental group children in both pre- and post-test of the number concepts in favor of the post-test of the highest means. While there are no significant differences among the marks of the experimental group children in the post-test for the number concepts being attributed to the number of times entering the mathematic center as well as to the number of minutes being spent there. There is above average positive relationship among the marks of the experimental group children in the post-test of the number concepts and the level averages of children’s interaction with materials in the mathematic center. The analysis shows big effectiveness of adding a math center according to the early learning standards in developing the number concepts. In the light of such findings, the researcher recommends motivating teachers to establish math centers in classes for the effective impact on learning the mathematical concepts in general and number concepts in particular. It is essential that teachers make use of the document of the early learning standards in all its levels with more concern about cognitive fields, which contain the field of numbers and mathematical operations, to be presented through developmentally appropriate practices in all activities of the daily program and especially during centers’ time. Key words: Mathematics Center, The Early Learning Standards, Number Concepts, Pre-school, Interaction with material.
